Village Anduze

Vaison La Romaine (Expo)

Village Vaison La Romaine

The Roman bridge in Vaison la Romaine, the town is in the French department of Vaucluse, and dates to the 1st century. The name of the city in the Roman Empire was Vasio Vocontiorum, which refers to the Vocontii, the Gallo-Roman people in the area.

The bridge spans the river Ouvèze where it is the least wide. In Roman times, the Ouvèze was used as a trade route; boatmen's trade unions organized transport across the Ouvèze to the Rhône. The bridge has a length of 17.2 meters and is 9 meters wide.

The bridge is a tourist attraction and has remained in reasonably good condition since Roman times, despite floods and mudslides in the Ouvèze. During the Middle Ages it was the only access to the upper town. Visit the upper town and be inspired by the beautiful and narrow streets and look for the Sanite-Marie-de-l’Assomption of old Vaison.

The town has many Roman remains, such as an ancient Roman theater. The Archaeological Museum Théo Desplans on Puymin Hill is a popular tourist destination with about 60,000 visitors a year.

In 1840, the Roman bridge was recognized as a monument historique of France. German dynamite damaged the underside during World War II, but this was restored in the 1950s.

In September 1992, 37 people were killed near the Roman bridge as a result of a tidal wave. After weeks of drought, a downpour instantly turned the almost dry Ouvèze into a raging, raging stream. In 4 hours, large amounts of precipitation (between 143mm and 300mm) fell at various locations. The centuries-old bridge remained virtually unharmed. The property damage just over 76 million euros.

It is said that the village was born around a large box, adjacent to a well. Village Nyons

Village Nyons

Nyons_Kerk_vilage_markt

The town of Nyons, famous for its black olives, is in the southern part of Drôme. Its olive grove is classified as a "Remarkable Taste Location" (Site Remarquabel du Goût), and the olive oil has been awarded the AOP label.

One of Nyons' most iconic structures is probably the Pont Roman bridge, which crosses the Eygues. This gray stone arched bridge consists of only one arch; has an outreach of 43 meters and a height of 18 meters. The view of the river and the surrounding landscape is photogenic! At the foot of the bridge, historic oil mills from the 18th and 19th centuries are a reminder that olive oil production has been important for centuries.

The historic city, accessible via Rue des Bas-Bourgs, is also full of architectural gems. Here you will find, among other things, the Saint-Jacques gate from the 15th century, part of the medieval quarter. Or the 17th century Saint-Vincent church, which houses a beautiful collection of paintings.

Also, worth mentioning is the Place des Arcades square, dated from the 14th century. The traditional market is still held here every Thursday morning, where flavors and aromas mingle with cheerful colors. There are many dining venues around the square, watch how the sun turns, you can sometimes melt away.

Another iconic structure of Nyons that you must see is the Randonne tower from the 13th century, which is in the high part of the town. The climb to get there is a bit steep, but well worth the effort. Because once you have reached the top, you will be rewarded with a magnificent panorama of the city and the surrounding landscape! The Randonne tower, in medieval architectural style, originally served as a castle tower and military prison, before it became a religious building in the 19th century, the chapel Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, now recognizable by the statue of the Virgin Mary on top.

Then head towards the atmospheric Les Forts district. There is still a medieval atmosphere here, with typical cobbled streets and arched galleries. Not to forget, of course, the former feudal castle, and some remains in the form of walls, other traces of this historic past. Nyons is therefore a city where it is wonderful to stay.
