Kokosnotenboom

De kokospalm (Cocos nucifera) is een lid van de palmboomfamilie (Arecaceae) en de enige levende soort van het geslacht Cocos. De naam komt van het oude Portugese woord coco, wat "kop" of "schedel" betekent, na de drie inkepingen op de kokosnoot die op gelaatstrekken lijken. Ze zijn alomtegenwoordig in tropische kustgebieden en zijn een cultureel icoon van de tropen.

Mauritius is een zelfstandige republiek in de Indische Oceaan, bestaande uit verschillende eilanden. Het land ligt circa 855 km ten oosten van Madagaskar en circa 1800 km ten oosten van het vasteland van Afrika. Mauritius wordt gerekend tot de Afrikaanse landen.

Tot de republiek Mauritius behoren de eilanden Mauritius (1.864 km²), Rodrigues (109 km²), Agalega-eilanden en de Cargados Carajos (St. Brandon), die binnen het Britse Gemenebest ook wel de Lesser Dependencies genoemd worden en samen slechts 71 km² groot zijn. Mauritius, Rodrigues en het eiland Réunion vormen tezamen de Mascarenen, vernoemd naar de Portugese ontdekkingsreiziger Pedro Mascarenhas, een van de eersten die voet aan wal zetten op Mauritius. De hoofdstad Port Louis werd in 1735 door de Fransen gesticht en werd genoemd naar de Franse koning Lodewijk XV.
