Rose Hall Great House...

De stad bezit een aantal historische bezienswaardigheden, waaronder een kerk uit 1775 in georgiaanse stijl, de St.James Parish Church, het gerechtsgebouw en de restanten van Fort Montego Verder kent de stad, zoals de meeste plaatsen op het eiland, niet veel historische bezienswaardigheden. In de nabije omgeving bevinden zich een aantal Great Houses, oude landhuizen op plantages. De bekendste zijn Greenwood en Rose Hall, beide ten oosten van Montego Bay.

The city has several historical sites, including a Georgian-style church from 1775, St. James Parish Church, the courthouse, and the remains of Fort Montego. Furthermore, like most places on the island, the city does not have many historical sites. In the vicinity there are a few Great Houses, old country houses on plantations. The best known are Greenwood and Rose Hall, both east of Montego Bay.

Vanaf 1978 werd in Montego Bay jarenlang in de zomermaanden het 7 dagen durende Reggae Sunsplash festival gehouden. Door het succes van Reggae Sunsplash, ooit het grootste reggaefestival ter wereld, ontstonden er op Jamaica en op andere plekken soortgelijke festivals. Sinds 1993 kent de stad in de maand juli een jaarlijkse Reggae festival.

From 1978 onwards, the 7-day long Reggae Sunsplash festival was held in Montego Bay in the summer months. The success of Reggae Sunsplash, once the largest reggae festival in the world, sparked similar festivals in Jamaica and elsewhere. Since 1993, the city has an annual Reggae festival in July.

De koraalriffen in langs de kust bij MoBay hebben in 1991 een beschermde status gekregen. De kust, de mangrovebossen en de onderwaterwereld vormen deel van het 15,3 km2 grote Montego Bay Marine Park. Het onderwaterpark bestaat uit drie beschermde gebieden (Marine Protected Areas).

The coral reefs along the coast at MoBay were given a protected status in 1991. The coast, mangrove forests and underwater world are part of the 15.3 km2 Montego Bay Marine Park. The underwater park consists of three protected areas (Marine Protected Areas).

Wij hebben de “Nine Miles” tour gedaan, en is een op en af met een minibus. Opstapplaats bij het Hotel Riu Palace. We hadden gezellige gasten in de bus, en een nog leukere hostess, wat kan ze veel vertellen over het eiland. Je bent ongeveer twee uur onderweg om het dorp in de bergen te bereiken.

Nine Miles is een Jamaicaans dorp dat hoog in de bergen van de Parish Saint Ann ligt. Wat Nine Miles zo bijzonder maakt, is het feit dat Bob Marley hier geboren en opgegroeid is. Het geboortehuis van Bob Marley staat nog altijd in het dorp. In de buurt van het dorp, op de top van Mount Zion, vind je de graftombe van Bob Marley.

Het eerste wat we bezochte was een plaatselijk broodjeszaak, met lekkere belegde spicy kip. We hebben veel gezien, Dunn's River Falls, prachtige wietvelden, berglandschappen en uiteindelijk kom je bij Mount Zion. Het beklimmen van de watervallen is een populaire toeristische activiteit.

De watervallen zijn omgeven door een parklandschap met een weelderige, groene vegetatie die het gebied afschermen van de zon. De watervallen kunnen met relatief gemak worden beklommen. Maar pas op het kan verraderlijk glad zijn op de grote keien. Meestal is het beter om elkaar vast te houden. Volg de aanwijzingen van de gids. Helemaal onderaan de waterval is het strand.

Het hele dorp draait uiteraard om de muziek van Bob Marley en het veelvoudig gebruik van wiet.

We did the “Nine Miles” tour and is one on and off with a minibus. Boarding point at the Hotel Riu Palace. We had nice guests on the bus, and an even nicer hostess, she can tell a lot about the island. It takes about two hours to reach the village in the mountains.

Nine Miles is a Jamaican village located high in the mountains of the Parish Saint Ann. What makes Nine Miles so special is the fact that Bob Marley was born and grew up here. Bob Marley's birthplace is still in the village. Near the village, at the top of Mount Zion, you will find the tomb of Bob Marley.

The first thing we visited was a local sandwich shop, with tasty spicy chicken sandwiches. We saw a lot, Dunn's River Falls, beautiful weed fields, mountain landscapes and finally you come to Mount Zion. Climbing the falls is a popular tourist activity.

The falls are surrounded by a park landscape with lush green vegetation that shields the area from the sun. The falls can be climbed with relative ease. But beware it can be treacherously slippery on the large boulders. Usually it is better to hold each other. Follow the guide's directions. At the very bottom of the waterfall is the beach.

Despite being the hometown of one of the world's greatest artists, Nine Miles is not quite as touristy yet. This is mainly due to the isolated location of the village. It is the real fans who come here.

The whole village is of course revolving around Bob Marley's music and the multiple use of weed.
